Objectives and goals
The Sterile Processing Technology Program prepares
students to be skilled technicians and work for Sterile
Processing Departments in hospitals and surgical
centers. This course is based on The International
Association of Healthcare Central Service Material
Management (ISHCSMM) training requirements and will
prepare and make graduates eligible for certification
exam mandatory in the State of New Jersey. Training also
consists of the basic knowledge of medical terminology,
anatomy and physiology.
The main focus of this program is place on Microbiology and Infection Prevention. The course covers the rules and responsibilities of The Sterile Processing Department, including tools for cleaning, decontamination, handling & preparation of sterile equipment and supplies. In addition chemical disinfection, flash sterilization, high and low temperature sterilization of basic and complex surgical instrumentation, communication and human relation skills are also taught.
Upon successful completion of the program, the graduates will be proficient in performing entry-level tasks of Sterile Processing Technicians for hospitals and surgical centers.
Employment
Most of Sterile Processing Technicians are employed
in hospital's Central Sterile Processing Departments and
Ambulatory Care Centers. They may also be utilized in
clinics, surgery centers, offices of ophthalmologists,
physicians or dentists. Their broad educational
background, plus specialized focus, allows Sterile
Processing Technicians to function well in a number of
diverse areas of their field as well as cross-train to
Surgical Technology Program. Employment possibilities in
addition to Central Sterile Processing Departments may
include material management,
product development, research or sales.
Working conditions
Sterile Processing Technicians work in well lit, cool and
controlled
environment. They may well be required to stand for long periods of time, and
it is vital their attention be focused on the tasks at hand. Most Technicians
work a regular 40-hour week: although they may be "part-time", work nights,
weekends and holidays on a rotating basis depending on their facility.
